General Electric Green

Supported by a leading environmental group, new publicity campaign and heavyweight corporate partners, EnviroCitizen.org discovered that General Electric unveiled its plans to increase its technology research funds by 100%. This is to cater to research on pollution, emission and energy use tied to climate change and global warming. This is one of the world’s largest conglomerates that stated how it’s “ecomagination” campaign aims to double the revenues from the company’s environmentally-friendly products.

General Electric’s commitment to address the different challenges such as the need for more efficient energy sources, for abundant sources of clean water and for reduced emissions is then delivered by its “ecomagination” campaign. With this, the company plans to make more money through campaigns in making their green business greener.

According to GE Chairman Jeff Immelt, reduced emissions are often translated into lower fuel and energy costs. As a big player in sustainability and renewable energy, General Electric states that the company would concentrate more on wind and solar power as well as other environmental technologies which the company is already involved in. This includes lower emission aircraft engines, diesel-electric locomotives, water purification and more efficient lighting.

GE’s “ecomagination” campaign is supported by World Resources Institute head Jonathan Lash and other executives from American Electric Power, Canadian Pacific Railway, Boeing as well as Delphi, Cinergy and Pardee Homes. This is a very important step to some of the most important companies of the world. It is encouraging General Electric to put much emphasis on its research on cleaner and greener technologies, for a more meaningful as well as serious commitment to accomplish the stabilization of greenhouse gas and thus, contribute to global warming and climate change. NRDC’s energy program director Ralph Cavanagh described the “ecomagination” campaign as a very important action because General Electric is the most important actor in terms of impact and influence on energy as well as on environment research and development.

The goals of General Electric for going green include the following:

• $1.5 billion annual investments in cleaner and greener technologies research and development by 2010. This is up from the $700 million investments in 2004.
• Double the revenues from its products and services to provide measurable and significant environmental performance benefits to customers. This target figure is a lot compared to the $10 billion revenue in 2004. This is possible through GE’s 17 products in order to meet the campaign’s criteria which range from water purification, cleaner transportation to renewable energy.
• Reduce General Electric’s own emissions which are tied to climate change and global warming by at least 1%.

  EnviroCitizen.org hopes that other companies will take GE’s lead and put forth more effort to support green, eco-friendly initiatives.

A total of 140 GG1s were constructed by its designer General Electric and the Pennsylvania’s Altoona Works from 1934 to 1943. Initially introduced into service by the Pennsylvania in 1935, the GG1 was operated by its successor companiesPenn Central, Conrail and Amtrak. The last GG1 was retired from service by New Jersey Transit in 1983. Most of the GG1s were scrapped, but several were preserved by various museums around the United States. A GG1-class locomotive is 79 feet 6 inches (24.23 m) long and weighs 475,000 pounds (215,000 kg). The frame of the locomotive was formed from two bridge-like trusses joined together with ball and socket joint. The body rested on the frame and was clad in welded steel plates. The two cabs are in the middle of the locomotive, situated for greater crew safety in the event of a collision. A pantograph mounted on each end the locomotive body was used to collect the 25 Hertz, 11,000 volt alternating current (AC) from the overhead lines. Transformers located between the two cabs stepped down the 11,000 volts to the voltages needed for the traction motors and other electrical equipment on the engine. Penn Central 4801 and 4800 hauling freight through Elizabeth, New Jersey in December 1975.Twelve 385-horsepower (287 kW) GEA-627-A1 traction motors drove the GG1′s six 57-inch (140 cm) diameter driving wheels on three axles using a quill drive. A full electromagnetic analysis of Fresnel zone plate antennas and the application to a free-space focused-beam measurement system. $49.99 In this research, Fresnel zone plates were studied using an accurate, full-electromagnetic simulator based on the body-of-revolution finite-difference time-domain (BOR-FDTD) method. This tool was used to investigate zone plates for two different applications: zone plates used as antennas in communication systems and zone plates used as focusing elements in free-space, focused-beam measurement systems. Through detailed studies of zone plates for these applications, a number of general characteristics of the zone plate were given a more in-depth look than they have been given in the past. For the first application, parametric studies were performed for Soret, folded, and grooved-dielectric, phase-correcting zone plates for antenna applications. These studies were used to generate new design graphs, from which general observations are made about the effect of varying different parameters on the focusing ability of a zone plate. For the grooved-dielectric, phase-correcting zone plate, these studies show that a number of factors influence the focusing ability in ways that are unexpected, based on many of the simple techniques typically used to analyze zone plates. Each of these factors is evaluated individually. For the second application, a zone plate was designed to be used as a focusing element in a free-space, focused-beam measurement system. To determine the suitability of zone plates for this application, simulations and measurements of the electric field were used to compare this zone plate to a doubly-hyperbolic lens.
